BN(O) Visa and Student Finance: 2026 Guide

Short answer: a BN(O) visa allows you to study, but it does not automatically qualify you for Student Finance England. For many recent arrivals, the clearer route comes after ILR is granted following the settlement period. Another independent SFE category may apply sooner in some cases.

General guidance for England. Rules checked in June 2026. Not financial, legal, or immigration advice.

The BN(O) route creates two separate questions:

  • Can you study? GOV.UK says BN(O) visa holders can study at school, college or university.
  • Can SFE fund the study? That depends on whether you meet an SFE nationality or residence category.

Permission to enrol does not itself create a Tuition Fee Loan or Maintenance Loan.

Why the BN(O) visa alone is usually not enough

The BN(O) visa is limited leave. It is not listed as a standalone qualifying category in current SFE undergraduate guidance. Most BN(O) grants also carry an NRPF condition, but NRPF is not the decisive SFE test: the missing piece is a qualifying nationality or residence category.

The honest answer for many recent arrivals is “not through the BN(O) visa itself.” That is different from saying no route can ever apply.

The settlement route

GOV.UK says an eligible BN(O) visa holder may apply for settlement after 5 continuous years in the UK, subject to absence and other conditions. Settlement is also called Indefinite Leave to Remain.

Once ILR is actually granted, the personally settled SFE category can become relevant. Current SFE guidance normally requires England to be home and 3 years of continuous residence in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man before the relevant course date.

Five years on the BN(O) route will often provide more than 3 years of residence, but SFE still checks the exact dates, absences and course start date.

Applying for ILR is not the same as having ILR

Do not plan student finance around a future settlement application as though it were already approved. SFE eligibility depends on the status and evidence that apply at the relevant time.

A five-year anniversary does not automatically change SFE status. The person must qualify for, apply for and be granted ILR.

Can another route apply before settlement?

Possibly. A BN(O) holder may independently meet another SFE category, for example:

  • the long-residence rules after living lawfully in the UK for a substantial part of life;
  • a qualifying EEA or Swiss worker family route in an unusual overlapping case; or
  • another protected or settled status category supported by the actual Home Office grant.

These are not benefits of the BN(O) visa. They are separate categories that must be established on their own facts.

Does removing NRPF change the answer?

A BN(O) holder in financial difficulty may be able to apply to change the NRPF condition under Home Office rules. That may affect access to certain benefits, but it does not automatically create SFE eligibility. Read our NRPF and student finance guide.

Evidence and dates to check

  • the current BN(O) grant and expiry date;
  • all earlier UK immigration grants that may count toward settlement;
  • continuous-residence dates and absences from the UK;
  • whether ILR has actually been granted;
  • any independent long-residence or family category;
  • course start date and funding system; and
  • previous higher-education study.

Courses starting from January 2027

LLE funding changes how most relevant new courses are financed from 1 January 2027, but a person still needs an eligible nationality or residence position. The new product does not make a BN(O) visa an automatic category.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get SFE funding on a BN(O) visa?

The BN(O) visa by itself is not a published SFE category. Another route may apply, or settlement may change the position later.

Can I study at university on the visa?

Yes. GOV.UK confirms that BN(O) holders can study, but funding eligibility is separate.

When can I apply for ILR?

Eligible holders may apply after 5 continuous years, subject to the settlement rules. SFE settled status requires ILR to be granted.

Does lifting NRPF make me eligible?

No, not by itself. The change-of-conditions process and SFE nationality/residence categories are separate.
