The biggest student-finance misunderstanding is not always whether someone qualifies. It is what they qualify for.
A Tuition Fee Loan is paid to the university. A Maintenance Loan helps with living costs and is paid to the student. A route that covers tuition only may still leave a large practical funding gap.
Typical published position for 2026–27
This table summarises the main routes. It is not a personal eligibility decision.
| Status or route | Typical support | Central condition |
|---|---|---|
| Personally settled / ILR | Full support | England home plus 3 years in the UK and Islands |
| Pre-settled status alone | Tuition only | EUSS status plus relevant 3-year residence |
| EEA or Swiss worker | Full support | EUSS status, work evidence and relevant 3-year residence |
| Family member of EEA/Swiss worker | Full support | Both statuses, relationship, worker evidence and residence |
| Family member of settled person | Tuition only | Settled family member plus 3 years in the UK and Islands |
| Recognised refugee | Full support | Residence since recognition; no standard 3-year wait |
| Humanitarian protection | Full support after residence test | Normally 3 years in the UK and Islands |
| Long residence | Full support | Age-based 7-year, half-life or 20-year test plus 3 years lawful ordinary residence |
| BN(O) visa alone | No automatic SFE route | Usually settlement or another independent category |
| NRPF | Not an SFE category | Find the underlying nationality/residence route |
The same person may fit more than one row. SFE should assess the category supported by the actual status, residence and evidence. A stronger full-support route can matter when another category is tuition-only.
Full support does not mean the maximum amount
A full-support category allows an eligible person to apply for tuition and maintenance. The Maintenance Loan amount can still depend on:
- household income;
- whether the student lives with parents, away from home or in London;
- course intensity or, under LLE, the number of credits;
- course length and weeks of study;
- age and special-support rules; and
- other funding such as certain bursaries.
Tuition-only routes
Two high-confusion examples are basic pre-settled status and the family-member-of-a-settled-person category. Both can provide tuition fee support when their conditions are met, but current published guidance does not include living-cost support under those categories.
A worker, long-residence or other full-support category may change the outcome if it independently applies.
Statuses that are not automatic SFE routes
A Student visa, Graduate visa, Skilled Worker visa, spouse visa or BN(O) visa does not automatically produce student finance merely because it permits study or carries NRPF. The question is whether the person reaches a separate SFE category.
Previous study is a second gate
Even after a full-support immigration category is established, an earlier course or qualification can affect entitlement. This includes higher-education study overseas. If you previously withdrew, read the returning after dropping out guide.
Courses starting from January 2027
For most relevant new courses from 1 January 2027, LLE changes the product to a credit-based entitlement. Current GOV.UK guidance keeps the high-level distinction between full-support and tuition-only residence categories, but the available tuition pot, course credits and previous funding become central.
Never budget from the table alone. Confirm the category, course system, previous study and actual SFE assessment before committing to rent or course costs.

If the route looks promising, we can also discuss partner university options and preparation for the SFE application.

Which immigration statuses can get a Maintenance Loan?
Published full-support routes include personally settled applicants, qualifying EEA or Swiss workers and family members, recognised refugees, humanitarian-protection applicants after the residence test, and qualifying long-residence applicants.
Does pre-settled status include maintenance?
The basic category is tuition-only. A qualifying worker or family-worker route may provide full support.
Does a spouse visa include maintenance?
The visa itself is not an SFE category. Current guidance lists the family-member-of-a-settled-person route as tuition-only unless another full-support category applies.
Does NRPF prevent a Maintenance Loan?
NRPF is not the SFE test. The applicant still needs to establish a full-support category.
